Find out which name servers answer for a domain – the first thing to check after changing DNS provider.

Why NS records matter

NS records delegate a domain to the servers that hold its DNS records. If they still point at your old provider, any change you make at the new one will be ignored.

After changing name servers

Registries publish the new delegation quickly, but resolvers can cache the old NS set for the parent zone’s TTL, often up to 48 hours. Use the propagation checker with type NS to watch the switch.

Frequently asked questions

How many name servers should a domain have?

At least two, ideally on separate networks. Most providers give you two to four.

Can I look up NS for a subdomain?

Yes. If a subdomain is delegated elsewhere it will have its own NS records. If not, you will see “no records” – look up the parent domain instead.
